Scientific notation, standard form, and engineering notation

Make very large or very small numbers readable with powers of ten. Expand scientific notation to standard form, use exponents divisible by three in engineering notation, and control significant figures.

Convert to scientific notation

Write a number as a coefficient whose absolute value is from 1 to 10 multiplied by an integer power of ten.

N = a × 10ⁿ, 1 ≤ |a| < 10

Convert scientific notation to standard form

Move the decimal point right for a positive exponent or left for a negative exponent.

4.5 × 10⁻⁴ = 0.00045

Engineering notation

The exponent is always divisible by three, matching SI prefixes such as kilo, mega, micro, and nano.

123,000 = 123 × 10³

Round to significant figures

Preserve measurement precision by keeping a selected count of digits from the first nonzero digit.

12,345.6 → 4 figures → 1.235 × 10⁴

Very large and very small numbers

Powers of ten replace long strings of zeros, making values easier to read and compare.

0.000000001 = 1 × 10⁻⁹
