What does waist-to-height ratio indicate?

Should my waist be less than half my height?

That is the general, easy-to-remember recommendation. A waist-to-height ratio below 0.5 means your waist circumference is less than half your height.

Where should I measure my waist?

Find the midpoint between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the hip bone. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and measure after breathing out naturally without pulling in your stomach.

Are the boundaries different for men and women?

No. The NICE boundaries of 0.5 and 0.6 are used consistently across sexes and ethnicities.

Who should not use this calculator?

It may not be suitable during pregnancy or for people with growth disorders or conditions that affect height. When BMI is 35 or above, waist-to-height ratio adds less predictive information.
