What is the Savings Goal Calculator for?

It calculates how many months or years it will take to reach a savings goal (e.g. a down payment, a trip, an emergency fund) based on your current savings and monthly contribution — or, if you have a target date, how much you need to save each month to get there.

How does the 'When Will I Reach It?' calculation work?

Your current savings and the fixed amount you add each month are grown by the interest rate you enter (if any), and the balance is recalculated at the end of every month. The first month your balance meets or exceeds the goal is shown as the 'time to reach goal'. For example, adding 100 a month with no interest takes exactly 12 months to reach 1,200.

How does the 'How Much Should I Save?' calculation work?

The number of months until your chosen target date is calculated; the amount your current savings would grow to by that date (with interest, if any) is subtracted from your goal, and the remaining gap is divided evenly across the remaining months to find the required fixed monthly contribution.

What happens if I leave the interest rate blank?

Leaving the rate at 0 (or blank, which defaults to 0) makes the calculation purely linear — your balance is just the sum of what you've contributed, with no interest earned.

What if my contribution and rate never reach the goal?

If both the interest rate and monthly contribution are 0 (or your balance otherwise never grows), the tool shows a warning that the goal can never be reached — you'll need to increase the monthly contribution or the interest rate.
